Jewellery professor’s Asian adventure
A Birmingham Professor is heading to India this week with the aim of attracting the newest international creative talent to the city.
Professor Jack Cunningham - Head of the School of Jewellery – will spend two weeks in India, giving presentations to prospective students in Bangalore, New Delhi, Hyderabad and Pune.
The School of Jewellery, based in Vittoria Street in the Jewellery Quarter, is located within the Faculty of Birmingham Institute of Art and Design at Birmingham City University.
Professor Cunningham said: “An increasing number of Indian, Chinese and Taiwanese students are becoming interested in creative careers such as fashion, jewellery and architecture. The latter is particularly popular in India.
“I look forward to visiting the cities to promote the wide range of educational opportunities that are available here at Birmingham City University. The School of Jewellery has an enviable range of equipment and technologies available for all our students to experience, in addition to a portfolio of courses which includes; jewellery, silversmithing, gemmology and horology. International students bring diversity to the School and the mix of cultures also helps to enrich UK students’ learning experience.”
Keith Stanley, operations director for the Jewellery Quarter Development Trust (JQDT) and Jewellery Quarter BID (JQ BID), said: “The School, which was founded in 1890, is the largest School of Jewellery in Europe. With the Quarter’s thriving jewellery and creative industries just on the doorstep, international and UK students have the opportunity to learn first hand from the area’s wealth of talent.”
