Birmingham is now a World Craft City for Jewellery and Allied Trades. But what exactly are the allied trades?
As an innovative and creative craft, the term “Jewellery and Allied Trades” continues to evolve and grow.
Jewellery refers to personal ornaments such as rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings and brooches. These are typically made from, or incorporate, precious metals and gemstones, although they can also be crafted from many other materials.
Allied trades refers to the network of specialist crafts, technical services and supply industries that support, complement or enable the design and manufacture of jewellery. These trades provide the materials, components, tools and expertise needed at every stage of production – from concept to completion.
Allied trades include, but are not limited to:
- metal refiners and suppliers
- gemstone dealers and cutters
- engravers and enamellers
- casters, polishers and platers
- toolmakers and machinery suppliers
- model-makers and setters
- packaging and display specialists
- assay or hallmarking services
Together, the allied trades form an integral part of the jewellery ecosystem. They sustain the economic, cultural and technical infrastructure that allows jewellers to do their best work.
